"I flew you into that battle" were the remarks of the unchurched, retired, chopper crew chief on a Marine helicopter a few weeks ago, when, after hearing my testimony, we realized that we shared a day that young men died. He said to me, "It was Antenna Valley, right? November, '67. We got you guys in, but couldn't get you out." And then we hugged.
Among the most effective ministries in America are leadership prayer breakfasts, organized by Christians who understand God's purpose in giving their neighborhoods and cities visibility and prominence to be used to reach for Christ thousands of people every year who are not in our churches on the weekends.
The Del Mar Leadership Breakfast was the first of its kind in the city. It was organized through the National Prayer Breakfast Ministry and Kermit Sutherland's family team, partnering with a godly gifted couple Diane and Dick Freeman and their team of local community leaders and godly pastors. Driving a stake for Jesus in their community was blessed by God by 19 people praying to receive Christ. And now the follow-up begins.
Later that day and the next, a twenty-six-year prayer of mine was answered. I had prayed fervently for the opportunity to go back to the areas where I was trained in the Marines, with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. With the mighty help and ministry partnership of three wonderful Navigator staff men, I spoke in a Marine barracks to young men being trained as machine gunners on the very dirt where I was trained to be a Machine gunner and 18 prayed to receive Christ.
Then about twenty miles south of there, I spoke twice Sunday morning to Marine recruits, again, on the very ground I was trained in boot camp with a total of 436 Marines hearing the gospel and 65 praying to receive Christ, with another 115 coming forward and signing up to be trained as disciplers.
What about follow-up? The Navigators staff have excellent follow-up relationships, training, and materials.
By the way, these Nav staff guys have labored for years (have you sent your Nav staff guy a check lately?) and they have such a strategic view of what they are doing. When offered to have the Navigator weekly hour in the chapel, this Nav friend refused, insisting that the meeting had to be in the barracks. Gaining the trust of those in charge, he was offered the barracks for a weekly study in the evening, just steps from where the Marines sleep, shower, and are trained. Oh how different my life could have been, if such a Bible study had been available when I was trained there as a machine gunner.
I know you probably have not served in a war or carried a machine gun, but are you willing to pray a big prayer that God would use you to touch those in your past - a teacher, school friend, high school classmate, divorce attorney, someone that in human terms seems impossible to reach with the gospel? Our God doesn't need to get bigger, but our dreams do. He doesn't need to be more concerned about those who touch our lives, but we do. It doesn't have to be a Marine base. It could be as routine and traditional as our church. That's where Jim and Linda Underwood, along with their leadership role in CBMC in Lake Arrowhead, California, are ministering.
On April 27, we had all been thrilled with the 150 CBMC and church members who had asked God for one person to disciple. "How can we follow these people up and give them the training they will need to fulfill their commitment to disciple one person this next year?" was Linda's question. Just as the faithful Uriah couldn't rest while his countrymen were at risk "camping in the open field" (II Samuel 11:11), Jim and Linda were greatly unsettled by how to advance the strategic victory God had given.
How about asking God in your Quiet Time to bring to mind some old relationships, some old "turf" on which you traveled where He gave you favor with people or you have credibility. I know it seems impossible and you have opposition, but just as the Lord thwarted the words of Ahithophel (II Samuel 17:14) he can open the door for you to be part of His great plan for people and places that used to be close to you.
With a lot of hurry up change of schedules and flight arrangements, Jim and Linda's prayers were answered when we were able, in just one week, to conduct a hands-on Operation Timothy discipleship training for almost fifty people on May 4. I encourage you to consider praying:
Dear Lord, 1. Who could be reached by You through me in a prayer breakfast, an old barracks, or through our church? 2. What would I need to do to be used by You, furthering this goal? 3. Where would I find the help and team to do it? And what would be the first step You would want me to take in faith? 4. With whom could I partner to achieve this?
Because He lives,
Phil
